civitella del tronto: un paese, la fortezza... at around 600m above sea level, the town centre with its interweaving squares and charming streets preserves a number of fine examples of pure baroque and renaissance architecture. the large military citadel, the ruins of which can be found on the summit, was built in the early renaissance and was later targeted by four memorable sieges: three by french armies, between 1500 and 1800, and one, the last, by piedmontese troops, in 1860-61.
civitella del tronto: sea and sky... its geographical location on the border between abruzzo and marche (the marches) makes the town a convenient base for trips to the seaside resorts along the adriatic (the coast is 18 km away) and other tourist destinations around the gran sasso (half an hour by car).
civitella del tronto: domus dulcis domus dulcis is the name of your bed and breakfast in civitella. it is a 16th-century aristocratic residence that was rebuilt in the 18th century. from a small stone gateway you enter a loggia which leads to the old bedrooms with their doors set into painted stucco frames. at the far end is the old chapel with windows overlooking the valley bounded by the gran sasso. on the first floor there is a ballroom with a coat of arms in the centre of the terracotta floor, and a number of other attractive rooms. the atmosphere in the house is one of timeless peace and a simple but atavistic nobility. hence the name: domus dulcis, home sweet home: a “sweet home” is its message.
